Above or Below the Fold?

Designing a web-based application can be a daunting task.  Creating a great user interface is even harder.  I’m always on the look-out for tools to help me create compelling user interfaces.

A tool I found recently is from Google, it’s called Browser Size.  Google has analyzed the browsers of millions of users and has recorded the size of the browser window.  Using this data, they have created an overlay that shows the percentage of users that can see each part of the page without scrolling.

Each colored area shows the percent of users that can see that portion of the page.  This is a very useful tool when creating web pages, I use it to make sure the most important part of each page is visible to all visitors.

I’ve been thinking about a different car. Part of the research is to look at mileage. I was trying to find a site I came across many moons ago, but can’t seem to find now. What I did find was a site put up by the EPA. It has the EPA numbers for various cars, but it also allows you to create a profile and enter your own mileage information.

This is really cool, now, in addition to seeing the EPA estimates, you can see what people are actually getting. With each fill-up you can set the percent of city vs highway driving. It will graph your mileage over time and allow you to compare your mileage against other people with the same vehicle.

I found an interesting thing with my Suburban…people in states other than California seem to get better mileage.

Since I’m a little below the average, I’m thinking it’s time to do the valves and the oxygen sensor, maybe do a cat-back on the exhaust. Every little bit helps.
